“Choices” now available at Caboolture Private Hospital for breast cancer patients

Patients diagnosed with breast cancer from the Caboolture area will soon enjoy the benefits of the Wesley Hospital Kim Walters Choices Program (KWCP or Choices) without travelling to Brisbane.

In the true spirit of collaboration between the Caboolture Private Hospital and the Wesley Hospital, a KWCP satellite program, the Choices STRETCH exercise group will commence on 30 March 2006 for the benefit of women and men from the area living with breast cancer.

The Choices Program is a unique community service offering individual support and counselling free-of-charge, to women and men who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and their families irrespective of where they have undergone surgery and treatment.

The Choices STRETCH program is designed to meet the specific needs of patients immediately following breast cancer surgery and treatment. The program utilises exercises to improve range, motion, flexibility and strength particularly in the upper body.

Choices manager, Mrs Janine Porter-Steele said that KWCP is delighted to be able to help meet the needs of the Caboolture and North Coast communities, whose residents would otherwise find it difficult to access the Choices program.

“Expansion of the KWCP throughout Queensland is part of a strategic plan to ensure equity of care for regional breast cancer patients. The satellite program will be funded through the Wesley Hospital Kim Walters Choices Program and offered free-of–charge to breast cancer patients. Other satellite programs are offered on the Gold Coast, and in Roma and Murgon. We are hoping to include the Sunshine Coast at a later date,” Mrs Porter- Steele said.

Caboolture Private Clinical Oncology Nurse, Vicky Tanzer said she was extremely excited to be working with the Wesley Choices team, to provide the six week program. STRETCH will be held in dedicated refurbished facilities at the Caboolture Private Hospital.

“Caboolture is a pleasant 20-30 minute drive from the northern suburbs of Brisbane and from the Sunshine Coast. It has a fabulous private hospital which is easily accessible and has plenty of free parking.”
